Understanding Speedo's line of swimwear
"Technical" Suits: Whether you are involved in cardiovascular lap swimming, water aerobics or competitive race swimming, Speedo makes swimwear that is just right for you and your intended end use. The brief descriptions below will provide some guidance for swim suit selection.
- Fastskin® FSII,
is the most advanced and lowest drag racing swimwear in
the world to date! The unique fabric mimics a sharkskin
with dermal denticles (tiny hydrofoils with V-shaped ridges)
that decrease drag and turbulence around the body. Muscle
compression components reduce muscle vibration, and uniquely
constructed seams improve muscle coordination. The Fastskin®
FSII fabric is comprised of 81% Nylon and 19% Lycra®
spandex. This is the most advanced, technical swimwear
in the world, and if you are really serious about your
racing and times you post, this should be your suit of
choice.
- Aquablade...before
there was Fastskin®,
there was Aquablade. Unique Aquablade fabric offers lower
drag co-efficient and is slicker than human skin! Stripes
create channeling effect to streamline water away from
the body. Made from superior, chlorine-resistant 80% Polyester/20%
Lycra spandex. Aquablade is an economical alternative
to Fastskin®
FSII, and it is the preferred "competition"
suit for many high school swimmers.
- Endurance suits
are made from 100% polyester fabric. They are perfect
for training or lessons, where increased durability permits
prolonged use and the extra resistance has training benefits.
Endurance is chlorine resistant so it has 4 times the
life and 20 times the colorfastness of Lycra suits. Endurance
suits are heavier in weight than Lycra, and they do not
have the body-hugging fit. But for day-in and day-out
use, they are an excellent choice.
- Speedo's Lycra® racing suits fit snugly and substantially reduce drag resistance of the swimmer in the water. In general, that translates to faster competitive times. Additionally, Lycra® suits absorb or "hold" less water. Lycra® suits are less durable than polyester because they don't handle prolonged exposure chlorine and other pool chemical agents as well. Lycra suits are preferred for actual racing by many swimmers.
Advice from the EXPERTS...
It takes more than one suit! The bottom line is that most
serious swimmers need both a training suit and a
competition suit. An Endurance training suit will
hold up much better, and its drag and heavier construction
actually provide benefits in practice. A form-fitting, lightweight
suit made from Lycra® (which includes Aquablade) or
Fastskin® FSII material will provide that extra edge
when racing.

Keep your Lycra suit longer by following these guidelines:
-
Rinse in the shower before entering pool, to saturate the fabric
with fresh (non-chlorinated) water.
Rinse the suit in cool water (non-chlorinated) after swimming. Don't use detergents or put your suit in a washing machine.
Don't wring out the suit. Just gently squeeze the water out instead.
Hang up your suit to allow it to dry as soon as possible. A crumpled, soggy Lycra suit can fall apart before your eyes.
Clothes dryers are a "no-no." Exposure to high heat plus the abrasion of tumbling will greatly reduce the life of your suit.
Speedo's 9-thread flatlock stitching technology...
...sometimes it's the little things that add up to big benefits!
Speedo
utilizes proprietary 9-thread flatlock stitching machines.
Most other manufacturers have a 6-thread design. Speedo's
design provides 4X the number of loopers.
What does it all mean? Speedo's seams have more stretch which translates to better fit and more freedom of movement. In addition, the extra threads provide a flatter seam that's softer against the skin.
9-thread flatlock stitching is available on all of Speedo's Peformance suits.
